MUSIC B Tuesdays 12.40 - 13.45 The Beethoven's concertos.--we will discuss the genesis of the solo virtuoso concerto. MUSIC DROP-IN SESSIONS Mondays 14.00 - 14.45 An opportunity to try your skill at playing the recorder or to ask Michael about any musical problems you may have. MUSIC:EASY LISTENING Tuesday, fortnightly 15.00 - 16.00 Hits of yesteryear. Listen, relax and enjoy the music of the 50s, 60s and 70s. Trips to a matinée of a West End musical by popular demand MUSIC:GREAT AMARICAN SONGWRITERS: Tuesday, fortnightly 15.00 - 16.00 The songs and music of Gershwin, Cole porter, Jerome Kern, Irving Berlin, Rogers and Hart and many others from the golden period of songwriting. MUSIC: HISTORIC SINGERS Thursdays fortnightly, 12.40 - 13.45 An opportunity to hear the great artists of the past from opera, operetta, lieder, music hall etc. MUSIC: JAZZ APPRECIATION Wednesdays 15.00 - 16.05 Jazz appreciation group. Listening to selected recordings and discussion of various jazz styles. MUSIC: LIGHT CLASSICAL Thursdays fortnightly 12.40 - 13.45 Exploring light classical music such as that of Offenbach, the Strauss family--and even Bach and Sidney Baynes! MUSIC: MAHLER Mondays fortnightly 15.10 - 16.15 Many music lovers find 20th century music baffling, uncongenial and even "unmusical". Mahler ponts the way to the 20th century. MUSIC: PERSPECTIVES IN OPERA A Mondays, fortnightly 15.10--16.15 and B Tuesdays, fortnightly 11.30 - 12.45 Exploring perspectives in opera, examining well-known as well as neglected operatic gems MUSIC:PLAY THE RECORDER Thursdays Many of us learned the recorder at school--now you can have another go! Some recorders provided or bring your own. MUSIC: SINGING FOR PLEASURE Fridays 10.25 - 11.45 A choral group. Work ranging from folk songs and madrigals to operatic and oratorio choruses. Experience not necessary. MUSIC: SWINGTIME Wednesdays 11.30 - 12.35 Revisit the '30s and 40's. Listen and discuss the Big Bands, their vocalists and small groups MUSIC WORKSHOP Thursdays 18.30 - 21.00 String Chamber Music Workshop. We meet to play quartets or occasionally quintets etc.- Haydn, Mozart, Dvorak, Brahms - or even Shostakovich. PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT Tuesdays, fortnightly 10.00 - 11.25 How we relate to others, life in general and ourselves; considering our basic and more advanced needs and how we satisfy them. PLAY-READING Wednesdays 14.00 - 15.30 A group for people who love the theatre and enjoy reading parts. No experience needed. A chance at being an actor for an hour. PLAY-READING: WORLD PLAY READING Mondays 13.30 - 16.15 The group chooses from a variety of the best plays from around the world to read aloud. POETRY GROUP Thursdays 10.10 - 11.251 We decide on a theme for each week and members bring a poem for reading and discussion. POLITICS - USA POLITICS & SOCIETY Wednesdays fortnightly 11.30 - 12.35 U.S. current affairs and social themes seen in a historical context POLITICS - INTERNATIONAL POLITICS Wednesdays fortnightly 11.30 - 12.35 We cover a wide range of topics from human rights, non-nuclear proliferation, climate change, the IMF and so on. |
