ITALIAN-INTERMEDIATE B Tuesdays 12.40 - 13.45

Italian is spoken throughout the lesson with English used only for clarification. Grammar is taught through exercises.

ITALIAN LITERATURE Tuesdays 15.00 - 16.05

We have read many novelle, from Boccaccio to Pirandello and this year will concentrate on Primo Levi's Raconte.

LANGUAGE: THE STORY OF ENGLISH Tuesdays, fortnightly Autumn and Spring Terms 11.30 - 12.35

The fascinating story of the English Language from Old English up to the present and how it has changed.  How has tis language become the world's second language?

LATIN FOR BEGINNERS Mondays 14.00 - 15.05

For absolute beginners or those who have forgotten the Latin they learned at school.  We use Teach Yourself Latin, price £12, starting from unit 9.

LATIN ADVANCED Tuesdays 15.00 - 16.05

We are reading the Life of the Deified Augustus.

LATIN AMERICAN AND SPANISH LITERATURE Thursdays 10.20 - 11.25

Reading and discussion.  If you would like to have a glimpse into Latin American and Spanish Literature, come and join us.

Each term we pick four books - a classic, a work of non-fiction and two novels.  We take turns to lead discussions on the books.

Come and be a Bookworm!  Join us for a fortnightly discussion of contemporary and classic texts on Wednesdays

LITERATURE/HISTORY: EVERYDAY LIFE IN THE MIDDLE AGES Thursdays 14.30 - 15.45

Everyday life in the Middle Ages - an investigation into what it was rally like to live in rhe 14th and 15th centuries.  Literature, letters etc. written at the time will be used as evidence.

LITERATURE: MODERN AND CONTEMPORARY Wednesdays, fortnightly 14.00 - 16.00

Wevdiscuss novels, poetry and drama written during the 'modern' and 'post-modern' periods: e.g. James, Lawrence, Joyce, Virginia Woolf, Auden and Beckett.

LITERATURE:ART "IN THE BEGINNING WAS THE WORD" Mondays 13.20 - 14.40

Taking literature (the Old and New Testament, the Golden Legend) as a starting point, this course will examine the ways in which major Biblical figures have been depicted  before 1400 to the Renaissance.

LITERATURE-SHAKESPEARE  Wednesdays 10.20 - 11.50

A Shakespeare play, chosen by the group, is read aloud - then discussed by members of the class.

LOOKING BEHIND THE HEADLINES Wednesdays, fortnightly 10.00 - 11.25

A discussion of questions considered in advance based on a newspaper or magazine article

MAH JONG  Wednesdays 11.55 - 13.45

The world of Chinese dragons, winds, flowers and seasons is waiting!  Why not learn the game and teach it to your grandchildren?

MEDICAL TOPICS Thursdays, Autumn and Spring Terms 10.20 - 11.25

We discuss items from each week's British Medical Journal - news, disease problems, new treatments etc

MEDICINE: UNDERSTANDING MEDICINE Thursdays, Summer term 10.20 - 11.25

The basis of medical diagnosis and treatment - no previous medical knowledge is required.

The travel writings of a mixed bag of authors, some famous, some less well-known.  A series of illustrated talks.
