ITALIAN-INTERMEDIATE A Tuesdays 13.50 - 14.55 A practical course for those with a good basic knowledge of Italian. We do grammar revision and look at items from the Italian press. ITALIAN-INTERMEDIATE B Tuesdays 12.40 - 13.45 Italian is spoken throughout the lesson with English used only for clarification. Grammar is taught through exercises. ITALIAN LITERATURE Tuesdays 15.00 - 16.05 We have read many novelle, from Boccaccio to Pirandello and this year will concentrate on Primo Levi’s Raconte. LANGUAGE AND CULTURE Tuesdays, fortnightly Autumn Term 10.20 - 11.25 Language reflects society and is influenced by culture, so topics to be discussed include social class, dialects & accents, sex and gender, good and bad language, LATIN: POST BEGINNERS Mondays 14.00 - 15.05 We will continue to increase our vocabulary and grasp of grammar, using Teach Yourself Latin. LATIN ADVANCED Tuesdays 15.00 - 16.05 We are reading the Lives of the Caesars and other classical texts. LITERATURE: BOOKWORMS! Wednesdays, fortnightly 14.00 - 15.30 Come and be a Bookworm! Join us for a fortnightly discussion of contemporary and classic texts on Wednesdays LITERATURE: CHAUCER Thursdays 14.30 - 15.45 Marriage, adultery and religion in Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales No modern translations, please. LITERATURE: A GOOD READ Thursdays 14.00 - 16.05 Each term we pick four books - a classic, a work of non-fiction and two novels. We take turns to lead discussions on the books. LITERATURE: “IN THE BEGINNING WAS THE WORD” YEAR 2 Mondays 13.20 - 14.40 Taking literature (the Old and New Testament, the Golden Legend) as a starting point, this course examines the ways in which major Biblical figures have been LITERATURE: MODERN AND CONTEMPORARY Wednesdays, fortnightly 14.00 - 16.00 We discuss novels, poetry and drama written during the ‘modern’ and ‘post-modern’ periods: e.g. James, Lawrence, Joyce, Virginia Woolf, Auden and Beckett. LITERATURE-SHAKESPEARE’S HISTORY Thursdays 12.40 – 13.45 The class will be concerned with four of Shakespeare’s English History plays which contain much of his greatest work. LITERATURE-SHAKESPEARE Wednesdays 11.30 - 12.35 A Shakespeare play, chosen by the group, is read aloud - then discussed by members of the class. MATHEMATICS Tuesdays, fortnightly, 11.30 - 12.35 Spring and Summer terms Famous Mathematicians and what made them famous. MAH JONG Wednesdays 11.55 - 13.45. The world of Chinese dragons, winds, flowers and seasons is waiting! Why not learn the game and teach it to your grandchildren? MEDICAL TOPICS: Thursdays 10.00 - 11.00 The basis of medical diagnosis and treatment – no previous medical knowledge is required. MINDFULNESS-BASED STRESS REDUCTION Fridays 10.15 For members wishing to cope with stress and negative thinking MONEY: Wednesdays, fortnightly, 12.40 - 13.45 The Euro crisis and the banking crisis. MUSIC A Mondays 14.00 - 15.05 The Beethoven’s concertos.—we will discuss the genesis of the solo virtuoso concerto and then study the Brahms repertoire. MUSIC B Tuesdays 12.40 - 13.45 We will complete the Brahms course started last year. MUSIC: CHAMBER MUSIC GROUP Tuesdays 15.00 - 16.05 A small group of violin, cello and woodwind instruments who meet to play some beautiful chamber music together.
